He was listed as Ruthenian and his fathers name was Jan Jurkiewicz. In 1928 Josef Jurkiewicz became a U.S. citizen and changed his name to Joseph Marion Jerkens. He spent most of his life in New York on Long Island and was in charge of the horses on the Peters Estate near Islip, NY. He loved to play polo and had five children, one who is Allen Jerkens, a professional thoroughbred horse trainer.
