I would like to share a story in honor of, veteran’s day. My Papaw, Mr. Ernest Stuart was a stg. in the U.S. army in WWII with an artillery unit. He fought in France and Germany to help defeat the Nazi’s. Late one evening his unit was digging in and every time they would try and dig a German soldier would rise up from behind a hedge row and start shooting. So my Papaw told his men to go head and dig and he would get on the 50. Cal. and the next time that German decided he was gonna shoot, he had him!! Sure enough, when the men started to dig the German raised up and my Papaw said he laid into him like there was no tomorrow. After that they didn’t catch anymore fire from the hedge row, but as it was so dark my Papaw decided to wait till first light to go and see what had become of the German. First light came and my Papaw got up by himself and started out to see about the fellow he had shot at the night b4. He came to the place in the hedge row where he had spotted and shot at the German, but he wasn’t there. My Papaw looked down the hedge row and saw the man had crawled about 20 feet and was lying face down with one hand to his side and the other one next to his face with his fist clinched. Cautiously my Papaw approached, not knowing if the man was truly dead or not. As he came up to the man and could see that he was dead he reached down to the man’s hand that was clinched and next to his face. He opened his tightly clinched hand only to find a picture of a woman and a small child……. My grandfather knew he had killed many husbands and fathers, but at that moment he said it got personal. It was a life changing moment for one of the strongest men I will ever know!! He always said that he knew that man probably didn’t want to be there just as bad as he didn’t want to be there, but they were pawns in a much bigger game. Much love, Papaw R. I.P.
