I would strongly encourage everyone to attend the national demonstration in Dublin tomorrow to show solidarity with the people of Gaza and outrage at the barbaric acts of the Israeli state. Over 1800 people have been killed by the Israeli army in the last few weeks in a totally unjust and one-sided conflict. Its very easy to condemn these actions from the safety of our relatively liberal democracy, but the fact is this is an international crisis. Israel is consistently supported and armed by the US and many European countries. Ireland maintains friendly diplomatic relations with the apartheid state of Israel. Ireland recently abstained from a UN vote to investigate the possibility that Israel committed war crimes. Our government recently appointed Charlie Flanagan, chairperson of the Oireachtas Friends of Israel group, as Minister for Foreign Affairs. The Irish Defence Forces directly fund the Israeli military to the tune of €3 million a year in equipment purchases. We are in a unique position as such a small country with pretty direct access to our politicians to at least try and affect change on this issue. We could really send a message as a country by expelling the Israeli ambassador and condemning the unjust actions of the Israeli state. The more people who take to the streets and show that when the government continue to cosy up to Israel on the international stage, they do not do so in the name of the Irish people, the more chance there is that something will be done. Please join us at the Spire at 2pm tomorrow.
