I wrote this song in 2011 and it appeared on the Distant Empires album. Turning on the news at the moment, it seems relevant today. Gudi Bee posted a live version today and a comment about it being relevant to the situation in Gaza. When I wrote this, I was travelling alot through many countries on my own. I would stop at many historical sites on my travels between gigs. Much of history I guess can teach us so much about the actions of us humans through time and one thing is consistent. No matter what generation, what century, there has always been struggle. I wanted to write a song about this and I thought if I got it right, a person could listen to it 300 years ago and it would be relevant. You could listen to it in any year in the future and it would be relevant. You could show the song to any human at any time in history and it would make sense. It would always be relevant if the human condition remains as all the generations before us. I chose Jerusalem as the focal point of the lyric because Jerusalem is a city where many cultures and and ideologies collide. Almost a microcosm of the world. It is a place where the struggle to live side by side in harmony seems magnified. The city of Jerusalem was used as a metaphor for human struggle rather than this being about the city itself or any conflict in the region directly, but if the song works, it would connect with any conflict if that makes sense?.It could be about the Ukraine, WW1 and WW2, Roman Empire etc.. The city of Jerusalem seems to encapsulate the idea and a nice neat way for me to get the point across in the song. The reasons for the struggle are not relevant. This was meant more to be a song about mankind, and if history teaches us anything it is that we dont change. What is happening in the news today could relate to many conflicts though history. It is like time does not exist. Time is not relevant. We are the same as we have always been. Lyrics below for anyone interested. Also video of a band version we filmed last year. Hope you enjoy it. From the city to the sand Its been a hard day in this land Ground has been shaking The people making a stand Who ever found peace on earth from bending the will of man? Theres gotta be one light on, in Jerusalem. In the wind You can hear the voices praying But no one ever wins This worlds not for the taking. After thousands of years Why are we at each other still? When no man is higher or lower and even the Kings Return to the earth like all beasts of the field. There has gotta be one light on, in Jerusalem. https://youtube/watch?v=vV6YRENYmoI
