IDPH PRESS RELEASE: The Wasserbahn Waterpark at the Clarion Inn in Williamsburg has agreed to immediately close its activity pool, wading pool, water slides, and spa as part of a Consent Agreement entered into with the Iowa Department of Public Health. The Agreement results from an enforcement action filed by the Department, which cited the facility for numerous ongoing violations of state swimming pool regulations, including repeated failures to properly chlorinate the swimming facility, maintain proper water chemistry, and conduct proper testing and record keeping. The facility is inspected by Johnson County Public Health, which conducted several on-site inspections of the facility following a complaint by patrons in March. Johnson County Public Health worked diligently with the facility in an attempt to bring it into compliance with state swimming pool regulations. The facility failed to comply with several corrective action plans and a proposed order to close the activity pool, wading pool, water slides, and spa was filed in June; however, the facility appealed the proposed order. On September 6, the Consent Agreement immediately closing the swimming pool facility was signed by the parties. The swimming facilities will remain closed until the water park meets the conditions outlined in the agreement, including a comprehensive facility audit and review by an engineering firm, repairing or replacing all equipment in need of improvement, and contracting with an outside pool management company to provide oversight, direction, and technical assistance. When the facility is allowed to reopen, it will have to continue to meet the expectations established by the Department and Johnson County Public Health in the agreement as necessary to protect the public’s health.
