IEBC gazettes names of candidates for Makueni by- election TUESDAY, JULY 9, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY EUGENE OKUMU The Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has gazetted the candidates that will be vying for the Makueni senatorial by-election scheduled for July 22. The IEBC has cleared Philip Kyalo Kituti of the National Rainbow Coalition, Jane Wavinya Muoka of The Labour Party of Kenya, and John Harun of Party of Independent Candidates of Kenya to vie for the Makueni senatorial seat following the death of Mutula Kilonzo who won the seat in the March 4 polls. The electoral commission has also cleared Urbanus Muthoka, an independent candidate, to take part in the by-election. The commission had initially cleared Ms. Diana Kethi Kilonzo, daughter to the deceased Mutula Kilonzo, to vie for the seat. However, her eligibility was challenged on grounds that she was not registered as a voter. The Disputes Resolution Committee, and independent organ of the IEBC found that Kethi was not registered, hence revoked the certificate of clearance she was given by the Makueni returning officer. Kethi’s political party, the Wiper Democratic Party which is part of the Coalition for Reform and Democracy coalition has instructed lawyer Tom Kajwang to file an appeal on the ruling by the disputes committee with the High Court.
