IF YOU’RE HAPPY AND YOU KNOW IT… There arent many out there - TopicsExpress

IF YOU’RE HAPPY AND YOU KNOW IT… There arent many out there that wouldnt agree that EMS is an exciting field. Of course there are times when we would question this as we’re being puked on, verbally and physically assaulted and dispatched to the same address at 3 in the morning for ‘toe’ pain. If this was what people in the industry focused on, their careers would be short lived. In between these ‘difficult’ calls we actually make differences that sometimes change the outcome from certain death to certain recovery. Do you have that same excitement today as you had during your first month? What changed? What stayed the same? What can you do to change it? Sometimes it is a leadership issue. Most of us are content to be followers. We march to the beat of our leaders. Is the lead medic or EMT focused on keeping the squad upbeat with training? Are they setting the pace for the crew on calls? I worked with a lead medic a number of years ago that would discourage the patient from being transported if he didnt feel it was warranted by telling them ‘how much the ride would cost’ or that ‘nothing would be done for them in the ER’ or they ‘could get in trouble for misuse of the 911 system’. This attitude resonated through the group. I believe this is rare. I believe that no matter how long we do this, we have an inherent desire to bring the best of what we have to offer to every call. We support each other and go home after each and every shift proud of what we did. I worked a busy downtown area for years, 20 plus calls a shift. Most patients were so drunk and soiled and abusive and seemingly uncaring about what we were there to do for them. Each and every call tested your professionalism and skills to the maximum. I was fortunate to work with a partner that had the same EMT and Paramedic training I did, ‘you can’t pick and choose what call you get or when you get it’. I love EMS, I am proud of what I have done over the years. It is truly a privilege to be part of this system, EMS. I am happy, and know it, now if the lady with the sore toe can go more than a few days without calling, I will be happier… Mark Mosier, MICP
