IJS program to take a closer look at Abenomics The Institute for Japanese Studies will host Dr. James E. Auer, director of the Center for U.S.-Japan Studies and Cooperation at Vanderbilt Institute for Public Policy Studies, and Dr. Gene Park, assistant professor at Loyola Marymount University, for an event to focus on the Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abes economic policy dubbed Abenomics. The event will take place on Thursday, February 6 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. in Hagerty Hall, Room 180. In Dr. Auers talk, Is Prime Minister Shinzo Abe Leading Japan Back to Militarism?, he will discuss the history of U.S.-Japan defense ties since World War II and how Prime Minister Abe may or may not be different from his predecessors. Dr. Parks talk, Abenomics: Beyond the Buzzword, discusses how Abenomics, which is much heralded in the media, ended more than a decade of deflation, pushed the stock market sharply upwards, and accelerated economic growth, but many challenges remain. This talk will explain what policies have been implemented, assess their impact, and highlight the challenges for the future. Hosted by the Institute for Japanese Studies and Japan-America Society of Central Ohio (JASCO) and co-sponsored by a Voice of Japan Speaker Grant from the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership, East Asian Studies Center, and a U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant, this event is free and open to the public.
