IMO the Occupy movement failed because it refused to articulate a coherent position on neuralgic social positions. It fooled people into thinking student loan debt was as onerous as actual slavery --whips, chains, transatlantic voyages and all. Yes, extreme income inequality and usury are awful, but Black and Brown communities have known that since the first of forever. Now that the economy has improved where are those Occupy folks? Time has demonstrated that the impetus for Occupy was mostly immediate self interest and that has made the movement indistinguishable from the corporate excesses they ostensibly occupied. We have a moment, right now--crystal clear-- that elegantly intersects the domains of class, privilege, capitalism, and structural inequality. A reality that begs the question, to whom are rights accorded to in this country? Who has the right to life?
