IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM COOLUM DISTRICT COAST CARE Between now - TopicsExpress

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM COOLUM DISTRICT COAST CARE Between now and December you may find shearwater birds (also called mutton birds) on our beaches, either dead or alive. These birds will be wedge tailed shearwaters that have just completed their migration to nest locally on Mudjimba Island (and other places). If you find a live bird, they will be very weak and it is important to try and get them to a local vet ASAP (Coolum Vet would be good - they are expecting to receive some as we spoke to them this morning). Try to handle the bird as little as possible, dont give them any food or water and put them in a covered cardboard box (or container covered with a towel) for transport to the vet. The vet will assess the bird and decide whether to send it to the Twinnies Seabird rescue at Beerwah for rehabilitation. If the bird is dead, please send Coolum Coast Care Group an email ([email protected]) with the date you found the bird, which beach you found it on and how many dead birds you found (if more than one). The data collected about dead birds will be sent to Dr Jenn Lavers, a scientist who is researching plastic ingestion in shearwater birds in Australia. She has asked if it would be possible for us to report any dead shearwater sightings to her
