IN DEFENCE OF ANANTA JALIL (His Sermon at Dhaka Cantonment: Another Perspective) Ananta Jalil recently visited Dhaka Cantonment and spoke at a seminar regarding healthy living to motivate young soldiers and officers to join the new modern gymnasiums developed by the army. Although the campaign was successful, it was noticed that some veteran officers making unpleasant remarks about Ananta Jalil in Facebook. Here is my response from a different perspective. 1. I think we have taken it too seriously-the motivational sermon by Ananta Jalil to our troops. Lets look and feel with an open heart at the “Entertainment” part of it and let’s not fall hard on him. 2. Many of us, including me, seem to be unaware of this Super Action Hero Ananta Jalil of Dallywood. To some extent, he is presently the most sought after super star of our action movies. He directs and produces his films with big budgets. He has invested large sums & resources of his own, in introducing latest technology, VFX, special effects, HD Quality filming and graphics in cinemas countrywide. From an unknown entity, he has transformed into a craze! He has been able to attract crowds back to the movie halls with his movies that offer a fresh new feel. All this happened in a very short time. What an outstanding achievement by a Bangladesh movie actor in a fledgling industry. 3. Before 2009, Bangla cinema was going through a bad time. People were tired of watching the same kind of movies with same actors and actresses. Technology was almost non-existent. People always craved something revolutionary, but never dared to even dream of such high quality movie making that emulates Hollywood. Ananta dared to dream high. He took a chance that no one even dreamed of. Ananta did something great for the movie goers of Bangladesh, coming into acting from nowhere, he became very popular among the new generation. He is single handedly responsible for the advent of Hollywood/Bollywood style film- making in Bangladesh. He has also spawned the creation of Bangladesh’s first Science-Fiction film with full special effects. Sounds too good to be true right ? But its all happening because of this one guy with a big dream. 4. As said earlier most of us are not very aware of his meteoric rise. From a very humble beginning he rose to be a business entrepreneur of outstanding abilities. He owns a number of garment factories employing thousands of unemployed youth in an over populated country like ours, thereby greatly contributing to the economy of Bangladesh. He is also a Commercially Important Person (CIP). Some people who know him closely say, the ‘Guy’ is simple, amiable, kind and considerate. Moreover, he has established three orphanages in Dhaka and begun construction of a retirement home for senior citizens of Dhaka. He somehow reminds me of a caped crusader bent on bringing positive change to society. A secret super hero of our own maybe ? 5. Mind you, no less then Telenor (Grameenphone) has chosen him as their Brand Ambassador. Grameenphone is not a company that jokes on things like this. Their choice of Ananta Jalil as brand ambassador only signifies the potential this guys has to bring change in our lives. No mean achievement. 6. Ananta is mostly criticized for his unclear pronunciation in his films and talk shows. Think about how you react when you hear Arnold Schwarzenegger or Jackie Chan speak in heavy accented English in movies and talk shows. The French, the Chinese and many others care two hoots for their English pronunciation! Why should we be so much bothered about Ananta Jalil’s English. Its sad how we attack our own. 7. I heard the Army is erecting “Gyms” in various Cantonments around the country. The officers & men are yet to get attracted to the culture of going there and that is why as a part of motivation, Ananta Jalil was invited to inspire them. What’s wrong with the idea ?! Motivation on “Physique or Training” I feel it was not so important. It was a symbolic act. The guy is a great entertainer. The men and officers ought to have enjoyed his close company!! Though feedback is not known. After all he is not likely to make a series of lectures. While criticising the particular move by the authorities, we were rather harsh and negligent about the person ie. Ananta Jalil, heart throb of millions of Bangladeshi girls & boys. 8. May we all recollect for a while how Hollywood stars like Bob Hope & the likes have been entertaining the US soldiers for ages. Just Google Bob Hope and similar links to appreciate how the phenomenon is still very active & alive around. Bob Hope died at the age of 100. He was awarded over two thousand honours & awards, including 54 honorary doctorates. In 1963 President Kennedy awarded him the Congressional Gold Medal for service to his country. President Lyndon Johnson bestowed the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Hope in 1969 for his service to the man and women of the Armed Forces of the USA. 9. It might look lowly of us if we cling to our traditional & rigid views on such acclaimed subject like fraternisation between Armed Forces and the great stars of the silver screen. 10. In conclusion I would like to say it is more of respect instead of disrespect we should display to a human being like Ananta Jalil, who is a versatile contributor to our country’s much needed development. After all he is a son of the soil. youtube/watch?v=Ng3TH0gwh6M
