IN MY FAMILY, WE ARE ALL ARTISTS You know, we’re all artists. Whether you agree or not, you’re still an artist. Art has not been defined to us as what it should be. What we know to be art is only peculiar to painting, dancing and theatre. But the truth is, art is far beyond all these. Seth Godin describes it so well like this: “Art is the work of a human being – something a person does with generosity to touch someone else to make a change for the better.” I have been living with artists ever since I was born, but never thought of them as one. School as we all know has taught us something else about art and it has succeeded in taking the artistic features we possess away from us. Now, I know that: My dad is an artist. He fixes everything at home. Just get it broken and he’ll fix it. The best goal-keeper I’ve ever known. Don’t ask me, “what about Manuel Neuer, Peter Cech or Iker Casillas?” They’re all good but not as good as my dad. I don’t need to convince you to believe me. He’s a great artist. My mom is an artist. She’s an entrepreneur. She has trained artists. She’s a poet. Just ask her to write J.P Clark’s version of I am Abiku and you’ll see her flow. I’m an artist. I make ruckus that matters. My brother is an artist. He combines all arts in him. Gymnastics, Tennis, Soccer, and if you want a copy of your handwriting just show it to him and you’ll have the exact copy written by him without spotting any difference. He steals like all great artists do. My sister is an artist. She’s a poet. She’s an essayist. She’s a journalist-wanna-be, and she’s full of potentials. And you know what? We’re all artists. Don’t let the society dictates something else for you. You can do things that matter. Art lives in you. Your job is to let it out and create change. If you’re a doctor, you’re an artist. Whatever your profession is as far as you’re creating change, you’re an artist. Art is a personal act of courage, something one human does that creates change in another. –Seth Godin —MOAB © 2014
