*INFREQUENT STRONG LANGUAGE ADVISORY* Mental illness is not a joke. Mental illness is not funny. Mental illness does not exist to amuse you. I have said it on here before, and I will say it again and again until these types of jokes are no longer tolerated. I have exactly zero tolerance for jokes surrounding mental health and mental healthcare. These diseases are DEADLY. They KILL. They kill our friends and they kill our children. They leave families broken. There is nothing--LITERALLY NOTHING-- less funny than pointing and laughing at someone who is struggling with something very real, very scary, and possibly life-threatening. If you cried for Robin Williams but you laughed at Amanda Bynes being taken to the looney bin, this is my hope for you: I hope you feel the deepest, most permeating shame throughout your soul. I hope this is a wakeup call for you. And then, my greatest hope is that you will change your way of thinking and move forward by working to erase these types of jokes and mockery from our society. We all do problematic things that are embedded in our social culture. But true growth comes from being able to recognize harmful habits and making real steps to change them.
