INSERT 25 We finally got to the hotel. Me: Go ahead I’ll wait for you here. Sizwe: Inathi come on. Me: Sizwe I will not go in there. She’s going to freak out when she sees me. Go deal with your mother and leave me out of it please. After a long time he eventually got out of the car. I switched on the heater and sank on my seat. Suddenly I was overwhelmed by exhaustion. I hadn’t even slept because things kept happening left, right and centre. I took my phone and decided to call Nwabisa to see what was happening. It rang for a while and she eventually answered. Nwabisa: Ina Me: How’s everything that side? Her: I drove her to the hospital. Me: Are you still there? Her: Yes. I’m with one of my other friends. Me: So who is taking care of things in the house? Her: I asked my cousin Me: Alright. How is Ona? Her: She is awake. They gave her some injection that reduces pain. Me: Oh ok then. Are you fine though? Her: I’m okay. Me: Alright. Her: Are you and Sizwe fine now? Me: I think so Her: Ok then. I’ll talk to you later. Me: Cool Her: Bye I hung up and sat there. After a long time I dozed off and zoned out. Someone shook me lightly and I opened my eyes. Sizwe: Why aren’t you answering your phone? Me: Didn’t hear it. He got in and closed the door. Me: I need to sleep Sizwe. My body hurts and I’m hungry. Him: You’re hungry? I nodded. Him: Let’s go inside. Me: No Him: I don’t want to leave her alone in there. She’s not stable. Me: Kodwa Sizwe I asked you to leave me, didn’t I? Now you’re trying to put me in the same space with her and you know how she feels about me. Him: She’s fast asleep. Me: No I don’t want to go. Him: Come on Me: You’re being inconsiderate. He kept quiet. My stomach growled. I lowered my seat and tried going back to sleep. Him: Don’t be mad. Me: Just leave me alone. I don’t have the energy to fight with you. You just keep proving how selfish you are. Him: She’s sleeping though I kept quiet and tried suppressing my anger and hunger. He opened the door and got out of the car. So now I had to go to Funeka’s space and sleep peacefully in her presence as if she has never threatened to kill me? Sizwe is such an idiot it actually amazes me. I couldn’t even sleep anymore. I kept thinking about my warm bed at home and my mom’s cooking. After a while Sizwe returned to the car. Him: Bamba Me: What is that? Him: Food Me: No thank you Him: Inathi your stomach keeps growling Me: It’s fine I’ll get over the hunger. Him: What the heck is wrong with you? Me: I will not consume anything that has to do with your mother. Now could you please leave me alone? As soon as it gets light outside I am going home. You can stay peacefully with your mother. He kept quiet. Him: Aren’t you tired of fighting? Me: The day you stop trying to force-feed your mother to me is the day I will stop fighting with you. Him: She’s my mother Inathinkosi. Me: So that gives her all the right to disrespect me? He kept quiet. Me: I will not tolerate her treatment. The more she disrespects me, best believe I’ll distance myself from both of you. If you can’t defend me from her then I see no point in us building a stable relationship. Him: So you’re basically saying that you don’t see a future with me. Me: More or less… Him: Wow… Me: And I will not feel guilty for feeling this way. My own mother treats me with love and respect so I see no reason whatsoever for me to tolerate disrespect from other people. I’m distancing myself from her because I do not want to cause drama but you don’t seem to get it. Your ignorance is getting old, really. Him: Don’t talk to me like that. Me: Shap We sat in silence for the longest time till it was light outside. Me: Well that’s my cue to leave. He simply nodded and I grabbed my phone. I took some cash that was chilling there and got out of the car. I called the cab service and asked them to pick me up. After that I called Nwabisa and told her that I was heading home. She insisted on fetching me but I rejected the offer. I didn’t want to be sucked in Ona’s drama. I had nothing to do with it. As I was waiting in the parking lot Sizwe got out of the car and walked inside the hotel. I didn’t even have the energy to get pissed. I sat on a bench and waited. I didn’t even know what I was going to say to my parents ngokubuya endlini so early in the morning. It’s a bad look for a girl to come back to her parents’ house in the early hours of the morning wearing clothes from the night before but I had no other choice. After a while the cab arrived and I asked the driver to take me to central Joburg. From there I took a taxi that took me straight home. When I got to the gate it was locked and my key wasn’t even with me. I called my mom and asked her to open for me. Just then the neighbour walked out of her gate to sweep the yard. Cynthia: Heeeh! I ignored her. Cynthia: Ntombikayise! I ignored her. Cynthia: Ave udelela mntanandini! Uphumaphi ngales’khathi? I ignored her. My mom finally emerged and opened the gate for me. Cynthia: Hai Thembeka your child problem stru! Problem straight! Mom: Ina baby Me: Mama I closed the gate and we walked to the house leaving that vile woman to curse at me. Mama: I wasn’t expecting you so early. Me: I just want my bed and your food. She laughed and shook her head. We got in the house and I went straight to the bathroom to freshen up while my mom prepared a meal for me. I finished up and went to the kitchen to fetch my food. Mom: How was it? I shrugged my shoulders. She laughed Mom: Hai and shame awubathandi abantu ke wena Me: Exactly. You shouldn’t have allowed me to go Mama: UNwabisa asked me so nicely and I trust her. Me: Haike Mom: Let me prepare breakfast for your father before he complains. I went to the dining room to eat up. I was starving. After a while my dad walked to the dining room and was shocked to see me. Me: Please don’t ask. He shook his head and went outside. After eating I went straight to my room and zoned out completely. I didn’t even answer all those calls from Sizwe.
