Ohio’s unemployment rate (7.2%) is below the national average and much lower than Indiana (8.4%) and Michigan (8.8%). 2. Ohio’s new state budget provides individuals and businesses with a NET $2.7 BILLION TAX CUT over the next 3 years. The income tax cut is an equalized across-the-board tax reduction for every wage earner in every wage bracket. 3. Even before Ohio’s most recent tax reforms, Ohio’s overall state and local tax burden was $549 per capita below the national average. 4. Over the past 5 years, Ohio has experienced the 2nd lowest rate of tuition INCREASES in the nation and the budget continues this momentum toward more affordable higher education. 5. The recent Transportation Budget Bill makes northern Ohio a priority with a projected net increase of $1.12 billion for highways and bridges. Economic developers anticipate the bill will generate 65,000 new jobs. 6. The state budget provides $750 million in new direct aid to public school districts and a new $250 million Straight A fund to encourage innovation, efficiency and achievement. 7. The budget establishes College Credit Plus, a new effort to improve access to college credit for high school students taking college-level courses—new opportunities for students and lower tuition costs. 8. This year the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation announced a $1 billion rebate to private and public employers ($113 million savings for schools and local governments).
