IPI announces staff changes at the secretariat VIENNA, Sept 4, 2013 - As the IPI secretariat prepares for a new, successful year of work in support of press freedom and the promotion of good journalistic standards across the globe, we would like to inform our members of some recent staff changes at the Secretariat and other recent developments and upcoming events. Anthony Mills, IPI Director of Communications and Public Relations, has moved on from IPI. Bidding farewell to the IPI community, Anthony said: “I am deeply honoured to have spent more than four years working for a press freedom organisation as renowned as IPI. The global IPI family includes truly inspirational people. As I move on, I would like to pay tribute to the extraordinarily courageous journalists around the world for whom it has been my privilege to fight the press freedom fight. I know that their spirit will never be subdued.” Timothy Spence has joined the IPI team as Senior Press Freedom Adviser, focusing on Africa and the Middle East. Timothy brings to IPI over 25 years experience as a reporter, bureau chief and editor, spanning the globe from Washington to the Western Pacific. He has also taught journalism and trained journalists in post-conflict environments in sub-Saharan Africa, the Caucasus, Balkans and Middle East. Timothy is a former Fulbright Specialist in Journalism and a Knight International Journalism Fellow. Before joining IPI, he was a Brussels-based freelancer covering the European Union’s international development and environmental policies. Timothy, who held the position of IPI Press & Communications Manager from 2009 to 2011, has recently taken over the duties of former IPI Senior Press Freedom Adviser, Naomi Hunt, who is currently on maternity leave. Timothy speaks English, French and German and can be contacted at [email protected] IPI’s Press Freedom Adviser for Latin America and the Caribbean, Scott Griffen, will move to London to pursue a Master’s degree in Global Ethics & Human Values at King’s College. We are pleased to announce that Scott has agreed to continue his cooperation with IPI throughout his MA programme. He will also oversee other elements of IPI’s work in Latin America and the Caribbean. For any query with regard to the Caribbean or Mexico, please contact Scott at [email protected]. For any other issues related to Latin America, please contact IPI Press Freedom Manager, Barbara Trionfi at [email protected] In the IPI Development/Conference department, IPI welcomes Silvia Morales as IPI’s new Development Coordinator and Congress Manager. In this position, Silvia is part of a two-person team spearheading IPI’s fundraising and outreach efforts. In addition, she will oversee IPI’s conference and membership efforts. Shadi has a thorough understanding of communications, international development and journalism, also in new democracy, developing countries and war-torn political realities. Shadi will work with the IPI Press Freedom Team to cover media and press freedom developments across the globe. He can be contacted at [email protected] *** IPI has also recently announced the creation of the IPI News Innovation Platform, a follow-up on its successful Google-funded News Innovation Contest in which nearly $2.7 million in grants were given to media-related projects throughout Africa, Europe and the Middle East. With all grant funds disbursed among the 17 winners, and final reports flowing in, the News Innovation Platform (IPI-NIP) will shift the innovation focus to ‘sustainability’. IPI-NIP will promote dialogue, networking and new ideas around the topic of digital media innovation and sustainability. Central to this dynamic will be the experiences of our News Innovation Contest winners as they embrace the next stage of their projects. But everyone involved in the evolving digital media mashup will be invited to the conversation on innovative concepts, financing and sustenance taking place on the IPI-NIP website – at ipinewsinnovation.org and on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, among other social media platforms. To kick off the transition, IPI will host an event on Sept. 13 in London, to showcase and discuss the News Innovation winning projects, in the context of media innovation sustainability, in partnership with the Guardian newspaper, Journalism.co.uk (which runs the news:rewired conference), and with the support of Google. Mark Little, chief executive of Storyful, is already confirmed as a key speaker. The event will include a Google+ Hangout to allow for participation by News Innovation Contest winners who are not able to make it to the event in person.
