IRAQ: Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq, Mr. Nikolay Mladenov, on Wednesday expressed a deep concern about the recent acts of violence committed against the Sunni sect in the province of Basra. Mr. Mladenov said I am particularly concerned about the recent wave of kidnappings and killings that have occurred in different areas in the province. I call on the authorities in the province of Basra, including the police and security officials, to do everything in their power to strengthen security measures to prevent further acts of violence or threats against minorities, and to reassure the citizens of the sons of the year in southern Iraq, openly and on the absolute safety and security.
