IRISH EXPLORERS In the early Victorian period, when Africa was largely undiscovered, two Irish explorers were commissioned to go out and draw and name as many species of wild animal as they could. By an amazing coincidence, they were called Paddy and Mick. After several days trekking through the bushes, and several drawings of many diverse species, they came to a muddy river bed, whereupon they espied a huge creature with thick skin, two piggy eyes, four short feet and a long nose with two horns on it. Keeping as quiet as they could, for this was a fearsome creature, Paddy started sketching. After a while, he turned to Mick and said, What shall we call this one, then? Mick, who had been chosen for his creativity, pondered for a while and, with a sudden flash of inspiration said, I think we should call it a rhinoceros! A rhinoceros? whispered Paddy, for he didnt want to startle the creature whilst he was only halfway through his sketch. Why do you want to call it a rhinoceros!! Mick turned to Paddy with a knowing smile and said, Well-it looks more like a rhinoceros than anything weve seen so far, doesnt it!! :-)
