ISABELLA ATKINSON Mrs. Isabella Fredericks – Atkinson born Pinento, simply known to all as Ma Bella was the daughter of Felicitas Asaiclas. She was born on the 19th June 1892 and died on the 30th March 1980. She was married twice and her husbands’ names were Emanuel Fredericks and Eugene Atkinson. She was the mother of seven children- Angelina, Jusinta, Justin, Leonora, Francis, Aloysius and John Fredericks. Her only surviving child is 92 years old Francis Fredericks. Ma Bella was robbed of her education because she had to care for her mother who was blind. She was a very hard- working woman and travelled regularly on foot four miles to tender her farm. Usually alone at her farm, she hummed the dominant catholic hymns. On Sundays, she attired herself with draping skirts and Panuela on her head to mark her deep respect for the sanctity of her place of worship. When her husband passed away, Grandma Bella sought solace in her work as a care taker of the Government Guest House at Acquero. Her tireless dedication to her work and her excellent service to Government Officials earned her the Medal of Service of Guyana.
