✫ ISLAMIC RULINGS ON THE SOLAR/LUNAR ECLIPSES ✫ • A Hybrid Solar Eclipse is expected on Sunday, November 3, 2013...In shaa Alaah . While the eclipse will be visible to those on the East Coast of the US, those in Africa and the Middle East will get the best show — with total eclipse being visible to those in parts of the West/Central/East African nations of Gabon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Uganda, and Ethiopia. ** A hybrid eclipse, also known as a annular/total eclipse, is a relatively rare type of solar eclipse that shifts over its progression between a total and annular eclipse. At some points appearing as a total eclipse and at others as an annular eclipse. So while it’s a somewhat rare event, it isn’t radically different than other solar eclipses. ================ ✫ =============== ✫ An Eclipse is a Sign of the Power and Majesty of Almighty Allaah and a means by which Allaah frightens His slaves. Also, an Eclispe is a remider of the Day of Judgement. --> Allaah the Exalted says , ﺎَﻣَﻭ ُﻞِﺳْﺮُﻧ ِﺕﺎَﻳﺂْﻟﺎِﺑ ﺎَّﻟِﺇ ﺎًﻔﻳِﻮْﺨَﺗ “And We send not the signs except as a warning.” [Surah al-Israa’ 17:59] ْﻦِﻣَﻭ ُﻞْﻴَّﻠﻟﺍ ِﻪِﺗﺎَﻳﺁ ُﺭﺎَﻬَّﻨﻟﺍَﻭ ُﺲْﻤَّﺸﻟﺍَﻭ ُﺮَﻤَﻘْﻟﺍَﻭ ﺎَﻟ ۚ ِﺲْﻤَّﺸﻠِﻟ ﺍﻭُﺪُﺠْﺴَﺗ ِﺮَﻤَﻘْﻠِﻟ ﺎَﻟَﻭ ﺍﻭُﺪُﺠْﺳﺍَﻭ ِﻪَّﻠِﻟ ﻱِﺬَّﻟﺍ ﻥِﺇ َّﻦُﻬَﻘَﻠَﺧ ْﻢُﺘﻨُﻛ ُﻩﺎَّﻳِﺇ َﻥﻭُﺪُﺒْﻌَﺗ And from among His Signs are the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. Prostrate yourselves not to the sun nor to the moon, but prostrate yourselves to Allaah Who created them, if you (really) worship Him” [Surah Fussilat 41:37] >> Abu Musa (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported : The sun eclipsed during the time of the Apostle of Allaah (may peace be upon him). He stood in great anxiety fearing that it might be the Doomsday, till he came to the mosque. He stood up to pray with prolonged Qiyaam, Ruku, and prostration which I never saw him doing in prayer; and then he said : These are the signs which Allaah sends, not on account of the death of anyone or life of any one, but Allah sends them to FRIGHTEN thereby His servants. So when you see any such thing, hasten to remember Him, supplicate Him and beg pardon from Him. [Sahih Muslim : Book 4, Hadith 1990] --------------------------------- ✫ --------------- ------------------- • WHEN TO PERFORM SALAAT-UL-KUSUF ? Muslims should hasten to offer Salat-ul-Kusuf once they see the eclipse; they should not wait until there is total eclipse. There are authentic Hadiths according to which the Messenger of Allaah (peace be upon him) enjoined offering Salat-ul-Kusuf and reciting Dhikr (Remembrance of Allaah) and Du`a’ (supplication) when the Muslims see a solar or lunar eclipse. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said : The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah and they do not become eclipsed for the death or birth of anyone. But Allaah sends them to make His slaves fear (Him), so if you see that, then pray and make Du`aa until it is over. [ Al-Bukhari, Sahih, Book on Friday, 1048 ; Al Nasai Sunan, book on eclipse 1502 ; Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Musnad , Vol. 5 , pg. 37] Another narration reads : So if you see that, then hasten to remember Allah and call upon Him and seek His Forgiveness. [Sahih Bukhari 1059, Sahih Muslim 912, Al Nasai Sunan, book on eclipse 1503] So, he (peace be upon him) made the command of offering Salah (Prayer), making Du`aa’, remembering Allaah, and asking for forgiveness CONDITIONAL UPON THE ACTUAL SIGHTING OF THE ECLIPSE and not on the reports of the astronomers. Every Muslim must adhere to the Sunnah (acts, sayings or approvals of the Prophet) and act in accordance with it, and beware of everything that is contrary to it. Hence, we know that those who offer Salat-ul-Kusuf on the basis of astronomical reports are making a mistake and going against the Sunnah. It should also be noted that it is not prescribed for the people who live in a country where the eclipse is not happening to offer the Salah, because the Messenger (peace be upon him) made the command of offering this Salah conditional upon the actual sighting of the eclipse, not upon astronomical news that an eclipse is going to happen or on its happening in another country. Allaah (Glorified and Exalted be He) says : ُﻢُﻛﺎَﺗﺁ ﺎَﻣَﻭ ُﻝﻮُﺳَّﺮﻟﺍ ُﻩﻭُﺬُﺨَﻓ ﺎَﻣَﻭ ْﻢُﻛﺎَﻬَﻧ ُﻪْﻨَﻋ ﻮُﻬَﺘﻧﺎَﻓ And whatsoever the Messenger (Muhammad ﻰﻠﺻ ﻪﻠﻟﺍ ﻪﻴﻠﻋ ﻢﻠﺳﻭ ) gives you, take it; and whatsoever he forbids you, abstain (from it). [Surah Hashr 59:7] This indicates that Salat-ul-Kusuf should be offered as soon as the eclipse begins and should not be delayed. May Allaah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions. Q 5 : How many Rak‘ahs (units of Prayer) are there in Salat-ul-Khusuf (Prayer on a lunar eclipse) ? And what is to be recited in them ? A : Salat-ul-Kusuf (Prayer at the time of a solar eclipse) and Salat-ul-Khusuf (Prayer on a lunar eclipse) are each comprised of two Rak‘ahs (units of Prayer). Recitation in both Salahs (Prayers) is performed out loud. In each Rak‘ah, there are two Ruku‘s (bowing), the second of which is always shorter than the first, and there are also two recitations. After the Takbirat- ul-Ihram (saying: Allaahu Akbar [Allaah is the Greatest] upon starting Prayer), Surah Al-Fatihah and a long Surah are recited. After the first Ruku‘, Surah Al-Fatihah and a long Surah are recited, which is shorter than the preceding recitation. There are two Sujoods (Prostrations) in each Rak‘ah. This is the most authentic report mentioned regarding this Salah. May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions. Indeed the people in the times of ignorance used to say : ‘Verily the sun and the moon are not eclipsed except due to the death of a great person.’ But rather they are two great signs from the signs of Allaah, they are not eclipsed due to the death of anyone, and nor due to his life; but rather Allaah brings fear by way of them to His servants, so if you see anything from that, then betake yourselves to His dhikr (REMEMBRANCE) and His du’aa (SUPPLICATION), and to His istighfaar (FORGIVENESS), and to the sadaqah (CHARITY) and the freeing of slaves, and the prayers in the Masaajid; until it clears…” )) Source : [The Prophet’s (peace be upon him) Eclipse Prayer Described] Also in the hadith , {{ ... He (peace be upon him) then prostrated himself ; then he turned about, and the sun had become bright, and he addressed the people. He (peace be upon him) praised Allaah and landed Him and said : The sun and the moon are two signs of Allaah; they are not eclipsed on account of anyones death or on account of anyones birth. So when you see them, Glorify and supplicate Allaah, observe prayer, give charity ... O people of Muhammad, by Allaah, if you knew what I know, you would weep much and laugh little.
