ITALYs Fabio Cannavaro has become the latest name to apply for the Bafana Bafana coaching post, as it emerged yesterday that David Moyes had decided to pull out of the race to replace Gordon Igesund. Representatives of Cannavaro, who captained Italy to World Cup triumph in 2006, sent through an inquiry about the post, which became vacant last week after the SA Football Association confirmed Igesunds contract, which expires in August, would not be renewed. But the 40-year-old, who retired in 2011 following a spell with United Arab Emirates club Al-Ahli, is a novice in the coaching world, having had a single spell as an assistant at the self-same Dubai side last year. His record as a player is great, however, as he has won the World Cup with the Azzurri, and two La Liga titles with Real Madrid. Cannavaro was a Ballon dOr winner in 2006. Whether Bafana, whove plunged into an abyss, require the services of a coaching novice remains to be seen, not least as several experienced coaches have also thrown their names into the hat for consideration. Once the [Safa] president [Danny Jordaan] confirmed last week that the post was vacant, we saw a lot of interest from all over, said a Safa insider yesterday, who said over 20 CVs had dropped in the Safa mailbox in the last week. They include those of Dutch quartet Ruud Krol, the former Orlando Pirates trainer, Dick Advocaat, Pim Verbeek and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, who unlike his compatriots has no notable coaching history. Other high-profile names on what is becoming a ridiculously long list include Juan Ramon Lopez Caro, the experienced Spaniard who now coaches Saudi Arabia, and Manuel Jose, the four-time CAF Champions League winner with Egypts Al-Ahly. Former Manchester United manager Moyes, meanwhile, has withdrawn his application only days after handing it in via his agent last Friday. I have worked with David Moyes for the past 20 years and on Friday he wished to be considered, however, he now has another opportunity, so sorry for the change, an e-mail from Moyess agent Tony Asghar to Safa, which Sowetan has seen, reads. While applications continue to flood Safa House, the organisation is understood to be keen on Iran coach Carlos Queiroz to take over after the World Cup.
