DEAR FRIENDS!! ... and lovers of Yiddish literature and lovers of Yiddish generally - I am pleased to announce that the publication of Collected Poems of Yisroel Shtern Warsaw, 1919 - 1939 edited tirelessly by Andrew Firestone, with the assistance of Yitzkhok Niborsky and with an essay by Yitzkhok, will be forthcoming later this year. The book is co-sponsored by the Medem Library of Paris. I contributed my labours to a number of moving poems, which will be included in the Book. Yisroel Shtern was a well-known Yiddish poet, essayist and literary critic in Warsaw, both between the two World Wars and in the Warsaw Ghetto, where he died at the age of 48. Shtern lived in illness and great poverty. He was deeply religious and was apolitical, yet his poems and essays regularly appeared in the Zionist and Bundist newspapers between the wars. Andrew Firestone has been working with Shterns poetry since 2005*. He has gathered together 68 poems as well as many of Shterns essays, from these and other sources. Thanks to the generous assistance of volunteer translators of several countries, much of this is translated into English and available at yiddishpoetry.org This will be the first book publication of all of Shterns published poems, and will be the first Yiddish book published in Australia since 2006.
