Gurmit Kaur has endured a lifetime of heartache. When she got married at 18 years old, she had no idea that her blissful new life would shortly be replaced with nothing but tragedy. Within three years of marriage Gurmit Kaur gave birth to 2 beautiful baby boys, the older one Kuljit Singh and a new baby boy, Charanjit Singh. But when she was just 21 years old, her husband was tragically killed in an accident and she found herself widowed with a two and a half year old and a 6 month old baby. Since her marriage she had lived in a room granted by the Gurdwara where her in-laws also had accommodation. This now became her entire world, where she single-handedly brought up her children to be well educated, smart and loving Gursikhs. A few years ago, Gurmit Kaur’s life was shattered when her son, Charnjit Singh, was killed in an horrific road accident at the young age of 25. He was on his way in the early morning hours, to Guru Arjan Dev Gurdwara in Chandigarh, where he had volunteered to help with preparations for an Akhand Paath Sahib. As well as a handsome and popular young man, Charnjit was also a talented kirtan performer and often appeared on television singing Gurbani kirtan. It was as if the light had been extinguished from Gurmit Kaur and Kuljit Singh’s lives. In 2009, for no apparent reason, the Police came to Gurmit Kaur’s dwelling and grabbed her remaining son Kuljit Singh, saying he back home later. They turned her one-room house upside down but found nothing that could possibly be used as evidence. However, Kuljit Singh was not to return later. Instead, he was taken into ‘questioning’ where he was badly beaten and tortured by the police. When Gurmit Kaur finally got to meet him, his body was swollen and bruised. Kuljit told his mother he was in a bad way and was suffering from internal bleeding. Despite this, he was given no medical attention and the blood loss left him pale and unwell. In July 2014, a Ludhiana Sessions Court sentenced Kuljit Singh ‘Kanta’ to five years imprisonment for a false case registered under the Arms & Explosives Act. Gurmit Kaur is beside herself with anxiety. She remains in the one room and is struggling financially, at times she has gone without meals in order to save money. She needs urgent medical treatment for kidney stones, which makes her feel very poorly.
