Id like to point out a prevalent pattern Ive been noticing in the media in Canada since Idle No More. Its obvious to me and I am going to start keeping track so one day I can make a tidy little infographic and illustrate this thing I am noticing. It goes like this: Indigenous peoples resist colonial injustice, and have a victory. In this case it is the events of the last few months, beginning with the Tsilhqotin decision. This decision comes amidst the climate of successful pipeline resistance (uncertainty about the pacific Trails Pipeline) and Indigenous unrest which has peaked and lowed since Idle No More (that coming after 500 or so years of colonial oppression). The decision also precedes Mt. Polley, and Indigenous resistance is active and strong, and blockades and protests and other actions are happening or imminent. The Tsilhqotin decision has psychologically empowered many Indigenous peoples from many nations. It is confirmation in my mind that the Crown knows it must appear to be playing by their rules, lest the image of Canada in the international community become tarnished and appear illegitimate. In my mind it is confirmation that the Crown knows it is in the wrong. The result of the Tsilhqotin decision will be emboldened resistance from Indigenous peoples, and a sense that there is hope for a victory in a war which has lasted generations. This is scary to The Crown, and the Government of Canada. And colonial industry. Colonial counter-resistance happens. The propaganda machine is turned upon Indigenous peoples. News items are run which focus on some incident of aggression or micro-aggression against Indigenous peoples, usually using leading language or implicit messaging to reinforce racist ideas in the settler population. Then the comment sections flood with racist vitriol. These items are then circulated on social media, proliferating the articles, stimulating racist hatred, and spreading the comments sections of these articles along with them. The whole point of this is to spread racism and counter the empowerment gained by Indigenous peoples through victories. The goal is to reinforce settler racism while reinforcing how much Canadians hate Indigenous peoples. Of course, all of this is speculation on my part, and I am no scientist, or logician, and lack the education to mathematically express this or prove it. I just notice patterns, and the feelings that accompany them. I feel empowered, and then hated, and it is due to things I read from Canadian media/ministry of colonial propaganda. In reality, I am surrounded by people that love me, and no matter how much racist bullshit is printed it will not succeed in perpetuating the internalized inferiority which has been passed on to me through my colonial upbringing and education. I know who I am, and I know that people love me. I dont care if a few million racist Canadians cant get past their own colonization and complicity and spew out their bile all over the internet, in every newspaper, and throughout the chambers of government, commerce, within the police, military, and industry. I dont care about any of it. And it is because history is on my side, Creator is on my side, and so are the concepts of justice, truth, and righteousness. The more that is piled on to Indigenous peoples, the more injustice we face, is only more evidence against the colonial project. So dump away. One day the world will look upon this place called Canada and see it for what it is, which is a racist settler colonial apartheid state illegally occupying indigenous lands. For now, though, all I can do is try to show you what I see. Read through the articles and comment threads and try to see what Im talking about.
