Id like to propose this analogy: A Blue Mountains family have desperately defended their house but seen it burst into flames, trapping their grandmother and the family pets inside to die. Terrified, they jump into their car, without any documentation, not even their wallets, and, fleeing the fire front, drive above the speed limit, sometimes on the wrong side of the road, towards the nearest safe haven. They are intercepted on the road by a police officer. What is the right thing for the police officer to do? A- believe their story, given that half the Blue Mountains are ablaze, and escort them to the nearest hospital and counseling service where help has been set up to provide temporary community billets, clothing and support for survivors of the fire. Or.... B- charge them summarily with speeding and dangerous driving, not carrying a license, refer to them only as Lawbreakers and Prisoners, and literally bundle them out of their car on the side of the road, including the scared and traumatised kids, into the back of a locked divvy van, and drive them AWAY from the safe haven, and imprison them without trial and indefinitely in an outback gaol. All in the name of saving lives by sending a warning message to hoons about speeding and road rules. And why? Because the cop wants to be popular, and he knows the electorate are scared of hoons. Picture those little kids locked in the back of the hot divvy van heading west into the desert. Having seen what theyve seen. Try to imagine how their parents explain it to them. Put. Yourself. In. Their. Shoes. What would WE, as Australians, think of the cop or justice system who took the latter option. During a major bushfire. To a family. With little kids. Seriously, what kind of low, immoral, officious, cruel, UNAUSTRALIAN policy would that be? No-one I know, even the most xenophobic stickler would sanction Option B (as applied to people like us). However, in all intents and purposes Scott Morrison and his bosses are enforcing PRECISELY THAT POLICY. Tell me Im mistaken. This is madness.
