If a man stands behind a pulpit and preaches to you that you must follow Jesus Christ to be Saved, then he is preaching heresy and is most likely not a Saved preacher if he genuinely believes what he is preaching, because he is relying on his works instead of Christs blood-shedding death. God does not require you to follow Christ to go to Heaven. He requires you to own up to being Lost and then BELIEVE THE GOSPEL that Christ died for our sins (personally and individually), that He was buried and that He rose again for our justification...that He did EVERYTHING necessary for us to be right with God without any works, self-punishment/self-hatred (penance), reform or religious deeds on our part (Romans 4, 1 Corinthians 15:1-5, Galatians 3). Thats it! There are many people in Heaven who NEVER followed Jesus or did anything for Him, but were Saved by believing what He did for them. There are also many people in Hell who did follow Christ and live for Him and do good works in His Name, but never believed what He did for them alone to make them right with God (Matthew 7:23-27 with 1 Timothy 2:1-6). Many will cite James 2 (a book written to the Jews and not to the Body of Christ) where it says the devils believe and tremble to say that Faith Alone in Christs work is not enough. However, even if you were to try to apply James to the Body of Christ, it still does not work. The devils believe that there is ONE GOD, as do Muslims and unsaved Jews today. However, to be SAVED today, one must believe more than just accepting that there is one God. One must believe that God came in the flesh as Jesus Christ, died for their sins, was buried and arose and must PERSONALLY accept that to their Sin Debt being absolved! The devils DO NOT and CANNOT believe that because Christ did not die for the devils and they have no atonement and never will!
