If humans asked for a perfect world, the first thing we would - TopicsExpress

If humans asked for a perfect world, the first thing we would choose is to erase all struggle, suffering, and pain. But what is odd...is that humans would eventually, even if it took a while, begin simulating unnecessary struggle and pain. We would create situations or simulations where a man suffers, or has the chance to suffer pain. In fact, we already do it now. Weve done it for a long time. All sports are basically unnecessary struggles. Video games even. Any challenge, such as the Ironman/Tough Mudder competitions. People go out of their way to endure grueling hardship and possibility of great injury (mountain climbing, fight sports, etc). But if thrust on them by force, they would change their entire attitude and resist. Does all man wants for his perfect world is the choice to choose his suffering instead of it simply being thrust on him at random by his Universe, or does he suffer simply out of ignorance (that he still does choose it, he just doesnt know it)? A quote that is sorta related: The most fulfilling human projects appeared inseparable from a degree of torment, the sources of our greatest joys lying awkwardly close to those of our greatest pains… Why? Because no one is able to produce a great work of art without experience, nor achieve a worldly position immediately, nor be a great lover at the first attempt; and in the interval between initial failure and subsequent success, in the gap between who we wish one day to be and who we are at present, must come pain, anxiety, envy and humiliation. We suffer because we cannot spontaneously master the ingredients of fulfillment. Because fulfillment is an illusion, the wise must devote themselves to avoiding pain rather than seeking pleasure, living quietly, as Schopenhauer counseled, ‘in a small fireproof room’ — advice that now struck Nietzsche as both timid and untrue, a perverse attempt to dwell, as he was to put it pejoratively several years later, ‘hidden in forests like shy deer.’ Fulfillment was to be reached not by avoiding pain, but by recognizing its role as a natural, inevitable step on the way to reaching anything good.
