If people are in any doubt that Fairbridge W.A. Inc. are responsible for the preservation of the History and Heritage of the Village.have a look at the EMPTY PROMISES they made in order to secure control (hence income) of the Old Fairbridgians Club house...Just look at what they said they were going to do....THEY DID NONE OF IT and the building is now in a terrible state... There are not even any signs depicting the existence of a museum, there is NO curator and they claim to have spent $1.2Million on it BULLSHIT it is a disgrace.......The words painted in their submission 1998 are a far cry from what actually happened. WHAT A MASSIVE FRAUD...How much money have they made renting OUR clubhouse out since 1998. This should be investigated and the monies returned to the Old Fairbridgians. there is NO DOUBT that tyhey obtained it under FALSE PRETENCES.....The following EVIDENCE is IRREFUTABLE.. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Appendix 16 Letter from the Chairman Fairbridge WA to the Clerk of the Committee Child Migrants (CM 211) Fairbridge WA Incorporated is proposing to make a submission to your Committee in Perth on 24 June 1998.I will be appearing before the Committee in company with Mr Len Phenna, OBE and Mr David Buck, both members of the Board of Fairbridge WA Inc and both of whom are Old Fairbridgians.I have been informed that the focus of the Committee at its hearings in the United Kingdom has been the question of assistance for former Child Migrants in establishing contact with their relations in the United Kingdom.Fairbridge wholeheartedly agrees that such assistance would be most beneficial. However, our submission concentrates upon the other aspect of the Committees terms of reference. ie assisting former Child Migrants to come to terms with their childhood experience. We believe that the overwhelming evidence of former Child Migrants who attended Fairbridge schools and, in particular, the farm school at Pinjarra in Western Australia, is that the type of physical abuse that occurred at other institutions did not occur at Fairbridge. Nevertheless, the fact remains that the dysfunctional experience of all Child Migrants is something which Fairbridge takes very seriously. Our organisation was only formed in 1982 and consequently takes no responsibility for the policies of the child migration years. Nevertheless, one of its primary objects is the welfare of Old Fairbridgians insofar as that may be assisted by the preservation of the fabric and traditions of the Fairbridge Farm School at Pinjarra. For a very considerable number of Old Fairbridgians, the village and in particular their club house at the village, is most important. The outline of our submission, which I attach, is based on this premise.I would be most grateful if you could give a copy of the submission to each of the members of your Committee who will be present at the hearings in Perth, so that they may have an opportunity to know in advance the thrust of our submission. 17 June 1998 Memorandum Inquiry into the Welfare of Former Child Migrants Fairbridge Western Australia Inc is a non profit Public Benevolent Institution and governs the operations of the remaining area of the former Fairbridge Farm School. The organisation was formed after the sale of all the land belonging to the School to Alcoa of Australia Ltd in 1983 with the buildings and infrastructure donated back to the incorporated body and 28.25 hectares of land leased for 94 years.Incorporated into the conditions of that lease were that Fairbridge Western Australia Inc would preserve the physical and cultural heritage of the village and that it be available for recreational use by ex-Fairbridge residents. The organisation has a strong connection and commitment to the Old Fairbridgians and sees their involvement in the development and utilisation of their former home as vital to ensuring that the legacy of the Kingsley Fairbridge vision be modernised and adapted for life in the twenty-first century. While we are not an organisation that represents, specifically, the interests of the former residents, we strongly recognise that the village has played a powerful role in their lives and represents Home for the many young children who spent their childhood here as a result of the policies adopted by the then British Empire during the early years of this century. The Statement of Significance in the recently completed Former Fairbridge Farm School Conservation Plan that it is . . . especially significant because it was the first of a number of similar institutions established by the Child Emigration Society in Australia and Canada, it is now the only remaining site where enough buildings remain to illustrate how the institutions was organised. It is probable that for this reason alone, Fairbridge Farm School has international significance. The Old Fairbridgians clubhouseOld Fairbridgians were encouraged to return to the farm school for holidays or between jobs. The Clubhouse was built for that purpose in 1932-33 and was designed to provide recreational and living facilities for old boys and girls returning to the farm school.Today, in recognition of the importance that ex-residence place upon the significance of the building and also to the importance of maintaining a connection to their Home, the building is central to the now completed Interpretation Plan compiled by The Research Institute for Cultural Heritage at Curtin University. This plan recommends a strategy for the interpretation of the site with a focal point being a museum located in the East wing of the Clubhouse. One of the main reasons for developing a major interpretive and research centre is to assist Old Fairbridgians and their families to come to terms with their past and to educate the community about the Child Emigration Scheme and its place in the history of Great Britain and Australia. The recommendations of the Plan include the restoration and development of the Clubhouse over a period of four years as well as the employment of a professional curator to oversee and implement the project.Recently the Old Fairbridgians Association have requested Fairbridge Western Australia Inc assume complete control and management of the Clubhouse so as to relieve their organisation of the responsibility for its maintenance. This allows us to bring the required works within our planning structure while maintaining their vital interest in the building. A budget for the restoration and interpretation of the building has been prepared and is attached*. Funds will be sourced from a variety of potential sponsors and this part of the overall A$6.234 million redevelopment will ensure that the legacy of the ex Child Migrants who grew up at Fairbridge is maintained and explained. 15 June 1998 Preliminary Budget estimate:Note: this is preliminary budget and if this project proceeds funds have been nominated to further detail the scope and review estimates. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- © Parliamentary copyright 1998 Prepared 10 August 1998
