If the economy is like an ecosystem can it suffer from the same - TopicsExpress

If the economy is like an ecosystem can it suffer from the same ills? One thing that happens in an ecosystem is that a dramatic shift in environment, or interference from humans that radically favors one particular species or groups of predators. For example, introducing a previously unknown species of predator depletes the population of prey to breaking point. Or conversely the over hunting of wolves by man, results in an explosion of the deer population who the deplete their food supply. I wonder if in our economic system we have a predator excess. Or perhaps more precisely if they have evolved beyond the balance of the ecosystem. Since the 1960s it has been more profitable to decapitalize in major industries. This happens for a variety of reasons and motivations. Any single buyout, or closing is not a terrible thing in itself but when there are a rash of de-capitalizations the economic economic does not have time to recover. I rather like this thought process because it A: does not place blame on business owners who are just taking advantage of the situation the same way the Asian carp takes advantage of its, and B: it presents solutions. In conservation an environment can be restored in several ways. A new top predator can be introduced which monitors its own population better, the depleted species can be protected by law from hunting or its environment saved from development, or an aggressive population expansion project can be undertaken. All of these require action but they also all benefit every level of the healthy ecosystem from plants to wolfs.
