If we look around our houses, we will probably find a number of books. And, if we leave them where they are, they are basically space fillers or decorative objects. It’s when we look inside that they become more…lots more…like fudge brownies from a recipe in that special Betty Crocker cookbook…LOL. One of my favorite classics is “Pride and Prejudice.” The two leading characters have such an interesting psychological interplay and so much hidden emotion that it finally just bursts out, and against all odds…love conquers. And, what about our Bibles…I love it when Esther saved her people because she was created “for such a time as this.” I like to identify with her on that issue concerning our community…somebody has to speak out and say God loves and accepts us and I am one of them. Speaking of the Bible, most people have at least one but having one is not enough, we’ve got to discover the secrets they hold within the pages. ..here are just a few thoughts: They are a light when times get dark. (Psalm 119:130) They are a roadmap when you can’t find your way. (Psalm 119:9, 32, 35, 59 and 105) When you are facing a scary place they give you the assurance of God’s protection. (Psalm 23:4, Psalm 119:61, 95). They are a mirror that, when you look, you see yourself as God sees you. (2 Corinthians 5:21) They carry hope within them (Psalm 119:49, 74) They are a love letter from God, revealing His deepest feelings for us. (Psalm 119:41, 64, 76) They are building blocks for a firm foundation in life. (Romans 10:17; Psalm 119:66) They give us the right words to say (Psalm 119:42, 46) They give us freedom (Psalm 119:45) They keep us from doing wrong. (Psalm 119:11) They give us good judgment. (Psalm 119:65) They give us knowledge. (Psalm 119:65) They train you to think like a leader thinks. (examples: the book of Psalms and the book of Proverbs) They have the power to unveil things that are hidden from us…including God Himself! (Psalm 119:18, 38) They can unshackle us from poverty and lack; thus building a prosperous life for us. (Psalm 1:2-3) They remove our shame and humiliation. (Psalm 119:22, 31, 39, 69, 80) They are medicine to our bodies. (Psalm 119:92) They help us be productive. (Psalm 1:2-3) They keep us from shame. (Psalm 119:6) They are our therapeutic and counsel us. (Psalm 119:24) They give us comfort (Psalm 119:50, 52, 76) They revive us when we think we are going to die. (Psalm 119:25) They teach us how to live. (Psalm 119:29) They give us wisdom and understanding concerning this life and the world to come. (Psalm 119:97-104) They give us strength. (Psalm 119:28) They cause us to think positively. (Psalm 119:27) They preserve our life. (Psalm 119:37, 40, 50, 77, 92-93) They can be our “theme song” for our lives if we let them. (Psalm 119:54) Let’s plan to put the Word of God to work in our lives by taking a look at it every day! As Psalm 119: 16 says, “I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.” And Psalm 119:97, 111-112, “Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long…Your statutes are my heritage forever; they are the joy of my heart. My heart is set on keeping your decrees to the very end.”
