If, when Jesus mythically ascended to heaven, he started out walking towards the sun, he still wouldnt have reached it by now. In fact it would take him approximately another 650 years to complete a journey that light covers in a little over 8 minutes. Taking this in the context of an observable universe that light would take 93 billion years to traverse gives the first glimmerings of how pathetically small was the universe of the ancients; a microscopic mote of dust surrounded by shells in which were set lamps, presided over by an equally insignificant deity, petty and childish, with a mind even smaller than the creation over which it presided. Reality is so much more thrilling, liberating and awe inspiring than anything our fearful and superstitious forbears could ever, in their wildest flights of fancy, have imagined. And although I have no gods to thank for my existence that does not mean that the tiny clump of cosmic dust of which I comprise does not fell a profound sense of gratitude for having had the luck to become sentient and for a brief moment had the opportunity to contemplate the wonder of the cosmos.
