If you are joining us in reading through Joshua, Judges, and Ruth today’s reading is Joshua 13:1-14 and the devotion is taken from verse 14. But to the tribe of Levi he gave no inheritance, since the offerings made by fire to the LORD, the God of Israel, are their inheritance, as he promised them. The beginning of the chapter tells us that Joshua was at an advanced age when these events took place. He saw a significant amount of God’s handiwork in his taking of the land. But the job was not over. Not all the land had been conquered, so again God reiterated in the summary fashion what land was to go to the tribes of Israel. The one tribe left out of any land promises was the tribe of Levi. These were the priests of Israel and they were not to be settled in one location but rather they were to be settled throughout Israel so that they might offer spiritual wisdom but also remind the people that God was in their midst. As Christians, we should be a witness to the world of God’s grace, goodness, and expectations. We need to stand out in the midst of the chaos that is our world today and show that we are different. Like the Levites our inheritance before God is not physical but rather it is our relationship with him. We are not to be fixated on worldly possessions and worldly cares. Rather we are to be fixated on him and how we can serve him as well as serving others. It is very difficult sometimes in our materialistic world not to want some of the “finer things in life.” We would really like to have a nice place to live, enough money so that we don’t have to worry, and a healthy and happy family. Unfortunately because of the world today and when or if we become comfortable, we tend to forget God. I’m not suggesting that we pray for struggles and persecution. What I am suggesting is that we praise God for that which is given us and we strive to serve him more and more each day.
