If you are joining us in reading through the Gospel of Matthew today’s reading is Matthew 27:33-56 and the devotion is taken from verses 48 -51 and verse 54. Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.” And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split…When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!” In the moments before Christ death things seemed to be going as planned. The people who are witnessing the events seemed content that they were doing the right thing. Some of them might have even wanted to see a little bit of the show because they wondered out loud if Elijah was going to come and save him. You know, we all crave excitement. We all want to see something unusual happen. Several sports commentators have mentioned that the reason people go see a NASCAR race is that they want to see the accidents. Rarely do they think of the result that might occur if the accident is serious enough. The Roman centurion was there because it was his job. He was taught to observe things. He was tasked with making sure that everything went smoothly. So, he would be looking around, scoping things out if you will, and he saw a number of things that were out of the ordinary. In Matthew we are not told that it became dark. We are not told of some of the conversations between the criminals. But he saw and heard all these things. So when the darkness came and the earth shook he knew that it was because Christ was someone special. Are you amazed at who Christ is? Have you taken the time to look around and see all of things that are going on through Christ’s power?
