If you are working at becoming a published author, you could pay a thousand bucks to hit up a conference with hundreds of hung-over attendees, and then the one person in your sessions who asks wayyyyyyyy too many questions that begin with phrases like When I was writing MY NOVEL... or you can just read this brilliant piece written by the fantastic Elizabeth Law, who KNOWS WHAT SHES TALKING ABOUT, PEOPLE. I love this post. Print it out. Hang it on the wall of your office. Carve it in stone. Make it your commandments list.
