If you believe in a sustainable, diversified economy and if you - TopicsExpress

If you believe in a sustainable, diversified economy and if you reckon the pulp mill proposed for the beautiful Tamar Valley is a divisive dog of a project, make your views known on the lawns of Parliament, 12.30pm next Tuesday 28 January. Tuesday is the day Parliament has been recalled to debate Labors legislation to extend the pulp mill permit to 2017, ten years after the Labor and Liberal parties - in lock step - passed the Pulp Mill Assessment Act 2007. Remember, the proponent Gunns Ltd had just withdrawn the project from the formal assessment process in the Resource Planning and Development Commission (RPDC) after it was found to be critically non-compliant, Labor and the Liberals, then a majority in the Legislative Council, quickly passed the legislation dismissing scientific and community concerns about the proposed mills impact on the Tamar air shed and contamination of Bass Strait by effluent from the site. The process was corrupted by corporate self interest and political expedience. The proposed pulp mill has never been through a formal, rigorous assessment process. The pulp mill divided our community and ultimately, it broke Gunns Ltd - the only corporation foolish enough, so far, to put a single cent into the project. This time, Gunns receivers, Korda Mentha, have asked Labor in government to again use the mechanisms of Parliament to breathe new life into the project. We need to send a clear and united message to the major parties and the Upper House that community opposition to the Tamar Valley pulp mill remains strong. Greens Leader, Nick McKim, will be among an excellent line up of speakers. Join a concerned community of Tasmanians in exercising our democratic right to say no to the pulp mill. Wed love to see you there! Cassy
