If you dont care enough about the World Cup to watch it, but care - TopicsExpress

If you dont care enough about the World Cup to watch it, but care enough to know what you should be cheering for, heres your cheat sheet. The U.S. plays Germany on Thursday at noon Eastern, and Portugal and Ghana play at the same time. A win or tie against Germany advances us to the playoffs regardless of the other teams in our group (WOOT!). If we lose, then the other game becomes important. If that one ends in a tie, were in (WOOT!). If not, things get more complicated because it will come down to goal differentials. In a nutshell, we need to barely lose, and we need the other game to be a squeaker, too. Portugal has a larger deficit compared to us, so if we lose, we need for them to win, but not by a blowout. If Germany blows us out and/or the other game is a blowout, one of the other teams might advance instead of us. Nate Silver, famous for correctly predicting the 2008 election results, has analyzed the teams and predicts that the U.S. is 76% likely to make it to the playoffs.
