If you insult an atheist I am offended. Likewise, a muslim, a buddhist, a christian or a jew. The insult feels very personal. I am offended, not because i share their faith but because i understand the importance that religion has played in the history of mankind. For some people, it is an essential part of their being. With or without the existence or proof of a God, humanity has upheld the need for some form of spiritual beliefs for many thousands of years...not merely since the evolution of the iPhone, the writing of the bible, koran or the cross. Wars have been fought and blood has been shed simply because human beings fail to show respect for the spiritual beliefs of others. By that reasoning, an atheist insulting a christian is as easily as wrong as a christian insulting a buddhist. There is no honor in that. It isnt funny.
