If you liked my post the other day of David Saperton plays Strauss/Godowsky Künstlerleben (1940 rec.) and you enjoy the golden age of piano playing you should consider watching “The Budha of the Piano: Leopold Godowsky” The title Budha of the Piano was given to Godowsky by James Hunneker, the pianist Antonio Iturrioz produced a film on Godowsky’s most fascinating life, a Pianist par excellence, a composer, an arranger and teacher of many great names. He lived in a Golden age of piano. Friends in his circle were Rachmaninov, Hofmann etc. The film may be watched/obtained at: theartofthelefthand or at: amazon NB. Quite a number of Godowskys original works were considerably difficult to perform; the Passacaglia (which consists of 44 variations, cadenza and fugue on the opening theme of Franz Schuberts Unfinished Symphony) was declared to be unplayable even by Vladimir Horowitz, who claimed it would require six hands to perform.[5] Nevertheless, the work has had a number of recordings.
