If you want to refute something someone said regarding a topic, if you dont have as much information as them (it does happen - no one knows everything), its a fantastic idea to do some research on your own time and find the facts to have counter points ready. If you find yourself being unable to refute what theyre saying - CONGRATULATIONS - you have learned something new, and your understanding of the world just increased a tad. :) Most people dont take this approach because their little egos cant handle being wrong. Personally, I LOVE being proven wrong for precisely the reason I just stated. It means Ive learned something new, and the picture became a little bit clearer. The opposite would be someone who is willfully ignorant or bigoted.
