If your dog is not food motivated that does not mean you need to resort to punitive and harsh methods for training. Any trainer who tells you you must use a pinch, prong, or choke collar on a dog that will not motivate for food or play the trainer to avoid. All dogs have something that will positively reinforce the behaviors you want. For one unique client dog Who motivated wonderfully with food and play inside he did not motivate for food or play while doing leash work. But that little neutered boy sure loved to lift his leg on every blade of grass. The ability to stop giving me a behavior and go pee on something became this dogs outside leash work reinforcer. For this little boy leg lifting scent mark. I was able to take this rewarding behavior and use it to reinforce various other behaviors. The dog walked three or four steps nicely on a loose leash he could go scent mark. In A short time we were able to get this dog to walk his entire block before having to be released to go pee. No leash corrections, no punishment, just taking something that was important to that dog and using it as a tool to reinforce the behaviors I needed
