If your looking for a movie to take in this weekend, J&J heartily recommend you circle back to see Boyhood. If you have not heard about this film, it was conceived and helmed by Austins Richard Linklater, who filmed over a 12 year period with the same cast intact. His story follows a boy growing to manhood, as seen through the eyes of a child named Mason (played by Ellar Coltrane). This happens literally before our eyes on-screen, and a cast of Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette, as Masons parents, and newcomer Lorelei Linklater as his sister Samantha, are all superb and natural. To say this was a groundbreaking achievement in film making is an understatement, and its even more amazing how Linklater wove a coherent narrative through the years it took to film it. It is also impossible not to identify with almost all of the characters, as it echoes common life experiences shared from kid to parent. Lastly, it is sure to resonate with the audience from any area of the U.S., but perhaps more than any other, with Texans. There are real Texas Movies...Giant, The Alamo, The Last Picture Show, Terms Of Endearment all come to mind. Films that all Texans, or any one hoping to peak inside the psyche of the state, must see. Mr. Linklater has just added another masterpiece to this Lone Star tapestry. John and Jerry says this will be a film picking up Oscars next March...go and see it.
