If your teenager keeps telling you that school starts too early, guess what? He or she might be right… With kids around the community returning to school, household routines are shifting with the seasons. If you’re a parent of an adolescent student, you might be interested to learn that the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) just released its first policy statement on school start times. And many school districts are beginning to consider later starts. Judith Owens, lead author of the AAP policy statement and director of sleep medicine at Childrens National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., was recently quoted in the Wall Street Journal: Probably the ideal start time would be 9 oclock… We know that the average adolescent is really challenged to fall asleep much before 11 p.m. because of changes in circadian biology, she noted. We also know average adolescents need somewhere between 8½ and 9½ hours of sleep. So theyre probably best suited to wake up around 8 in the morning.” Have any tips or tricks you use to help your teenager cope with the early-morning school rush?
