If youre a person whos ever used the term black on black crime, you should stop for a second and realize youre saying either unintentionally (a lot of people) or intentionally (people like Giuliani) one of the most subtly racists things ever. Ask yourself: why isnt white on white crime a phrase? And even more importantly ask yourself why isnt black on black crime a thing in all the other black places on the planet? Im from a place where 97% of the people look like me, theres no such thing as black on black crime. Theres crime though. Its a very subtle, psychological way to dismiss crime in a community of people who are supposed be protected by their government. Its just crime. Not black on black. A criminal lives in, say Bedstuy, what is he supposed to do? Get a metrocard so he can go murder people on the Upper West Side? No, he murders locally. Criminals are lazy too. And these local people are black people. When Bernie Madoff committed his crimes on Wall Street, that was pretty much white on white crime. But thats not a term, because America isnt trying to dismiss white people. When somebody says black on black crime, theyre basically saying: these people murder each other all the time, let them do it. Thats not our problem. Until we need to move to their neighborhoods. Then well send cops.
