If youre wondering how NOT to do things, heres a few pointers: First, buy a house on the bubble. A shameless fixer-upper, if possible, with pink walls and one phone booth bathroom. Make sure you know nothing about how to improve it. Do this before you have your own ambitions and identity in hand. Do this as a floundering newlywed and exhausted new parent. Have two boys so they can add to your list of home repairs. At some point, leave your job for the added adventure of self-employment. Make sure you know next to nothing about business. Pursue a tiny market in which you have to constantly explain yourself. Wait for things to break. . . Ive spend a lot of time considering how we may have cultivated a more sensible path. Ive spent a LOT of time feeling like a disappointment to my younger self and to those who put faith in me as a high school and college student. Ah, the house I supposed to have. Ah, the career I was supposed to have. Ah, the MONEY I was supposed to have. Theres so much that I cannot give to my children . . . . But its so tricky . . . How can you love your destination and despise the road which led you there? I go to work and do something I love, something I feel passionately about, something at which I excel. I come home to two beautiful, healthy boys and a husband I love to pieces who is bewilderingly sweet to me. At the end of the day we have a ramshackle roof over our heads, plenty of food on our makeshift table, stolen moments full of laughter and a warm bed we can fall into and give thanks. Really, its just too much. OHHHHHHHH we just . . . what were we thinking???? I would never encourage our boys to stagger and bumble around their lives in such a poorly planned fashion. There have been some wicked stressful days (weeks, months . . . ) when pulling together felt like an effort, a battle. But who ever would we have been without it? I love this family. This familys gonna win.
