If youve ever been interested in playing the Jaw Harp heres a quick lesson.. Hope this makes sense to you... 1. Move your bottom set of teeth forward so that the edges of both your bottom and top sets of teeth are touching. You will have to stick out your chin so that there is no overbite. 2. Now that both your sets of teeth are even, hold the jaw harp firmly against your teeth so that the trigger is just to the right (or left if your left handed) of your two front teeth. WAIT! dont play it yet!! Let me finish explaining, I dont want you to chip your teeth! :-) 3. Use your pinky finger as a spacer to set the distance between your teeth by gently biting the tip of your pinky finger and freeze your jaw in that position. 4. Now you can hold the jaw harp firmly against the front faces of your teeth without unfreezing your jaw position. Its very important to keep the spacing of your jaw the same. 5. Place the jaw harp so that the trigger, (the thing that you pluck), is just to the right (or left if youre left handed) of your four front teeth. The top and bottom frames of the jaw harp should be held firmly against the fronts of your teeth while keeping the spacing distance so that the tongue of the jaw harp can fit in between your teeth when its plucked. 6. Ok now give it a try... pluck the harp either towards you or away from you. GENTLY! :-) Try breathing lightly thru the harp... not too heavy or youll get light headed! 7. Wrap your lips around the frame without obstructing the tongue of the jaw harp. Sealing off the air from around the edges of your mouth so that air only passes thru the frame of the jaw harp will make it louder! 8. Try whispering the vowels A E I O U... cool right?! Whisper ayai-yai-yai-yai-yai... oyoyoyoyoyoy... taka taka taka taka... 9. Explore and have fun creating your own sounds by whispering the different sounds of alphabet letters, lightly breathing at different speeds, and plucking in different directions using either your index finger or your thumb... OK! There ya go, hopefully that was helpful and not too confusing! :-) Evan Fraser
