Its about outlawing a cruel practice known as soring ..Read below for more info: Soring refers to putting caustic, toxic, irritating, or painful substances, or heavy chains and weights, on the legs of horses to train them to pick their feet up high so theyll do better in horse shows. It is painful, dangerous, and cruel. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) is trying to get Congress to pass the Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act when they meet for the final time this session on Dec. 12. (If youre not a member of the veterinary profession, you can edit the letter it generates for you to reflect that.) The AVMA has this to say: Soring horses has been illegal for more than 40 years, yet it’s still happening at an alarming rate within the walking horse show industry. The PAST Act will take many important steps to protect these creatures that cannot protect themselves, by improving the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s enforcement capabilities and penalizing those who sore their horses, hopefully bringing an end to this barbaric practice.
