If youve never been to the Black Box Theater in Frisco, heres a look. 2,300 sq. ft., 120 seats. It works well for some of our arts groups, but according to Gary Carley, President of the Community Development Corporation, it was never meant to be the only facility for the arts in Frisco. The purpose was to act as an arts incubator, helping groups to grow and eventually warrant a new facility. Many of our local non-profits and businesses dont use the Black Box because their audiences of 500+ wont fit and its not acoustically appropriate. One of our oldest groups, the Frisco Chorale had over 1,000 people at their last concert, and our newest group, the Frisco Youth Symphony, had 400+ at their inaugural concert in November! Just recently, we had a theater group cancel every show for Frisco in December and book a facility in a neighboring city to perform because the Black Box is simply too small; their last production sold out 16 shows in the space, and that was just to friends and family! I think our arts groups have hatched and outgrown the Black Box. . . were ready for a real home!
