Harlingen in midst of commercial building boom (6/25/2013) HARLINGEN - Commercial building permits have increased 229 percent in value throughout January 2013 to April 2013 as compared to the same time period in 2012, according to the RGV Partnership and the Harlingen Economic Development Corporation. The actual number on permit valuations for 2013 is $62,866,871 compared to $19,075,054 in 2012. The large increase has been attributed partly to four major projects: • a new $6.2 million outpatient clinic, • a $3.1 million renovation of an HEB grocery store, • the new $2.8 million Burlington Coat Factory and • a $7.5 million valuation for the new Sam’s Wholesale Club. The dollars in commercial building permits tops the region, with Brownsville totaling slightly above $34 million, and McAllen around $31 million. In addition, residential and commercial permits are also up at $68,436,822 in 2013, as compared to $23,826,758 year to date in 2012. Harlingen EDC Chief Executive Officer Raudel Garza notes Burlington Coat Factory, Sam’s Club and other businesses are adding more than 300,000 sf of additional retail space to the city, and the industrial real estate market has absorbed more than 260,000 sf of space in the last eight months.
