If youve never seen the night sky and seen more than a few solitary stars you may not be aware of what youre missing... or what we as a society have essentially lost... darkness. Since the advent of electric lighting, our homes, our yards and neighborhoods and our cities have become brighter and brighter, cutting us off from the view of the night sky that humans had known intimately since the dawn of time. There used to be a time when people on the surface would know their place in the world by looking up at the constellations of stars... now we look down from airplanes and see the constellations of our city lights. People suffer from shift work disorder, sleep apnea and melatonin deficiency while birds and turtle hatchlings fare no better... now drawn by the brightness of our light polluting cities they die trying to find their way in the night. What is light pollution and what can we do about it? Why should we even care? These issues and more are considered in the 2011 independent film The City Dark by Ian Cheney.
