If you’re joining us in reading through Isaiah and Jeremiah - TopicsExpress

If you’re joining us in reading through Isaiah and Jeremiah today’s reading is Jeremiah chapter 44 and the devotion is taken from 44:24-26. Then Jeremiah said to all the people, including the women, “Hear the word of the LORD, all you people of Judah in Egypt. This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: You and your wives have done what you said you would do when you promised, ‘We will certainly carry out the vows we made to burn incense and pour out drink offerings to the Queen of Heaven.’ “Go ahead then, do what you promised! Keep your vows! But hear the word of the LORD, all you Jews living in Egypt: ‘I swear by my great name,’ says the LORD, ‘that no one from Judah living anywhere in Egypt will ever again invoke my name or swear, “As surely as the Sovereign LORD lives.” That God has given us a free will is absolutely amazing. Even as he loves us he gives us the ability to choose against him at any given point in time. We can know what his will is; we can know what his desires are, and yet we can willfully choose against them. However, there may be a problem when we do that. We may end up with “unintended consequences” in our decision. While we are free to make the choice we also free to receive the punishment or chastisement which God will give based on that decision. The people of Judah made the decision to go to Egypt. This was expressly against God’s will and as such, Jeremiah warned them not to make that decision. In going against Jeremiah’s warning, the decision was made to not only to go to Egypt but also to take Jeremiah with them. I think this was because they felt God would not judge them if Jeremiah was with them. We do the same thing when we choose to go against God’s known will. When we choose to do things that he is said not to do, or we fail to do things that he has said for us to do we can end up being chastised by him. Evaluate your life today. Are there some things in your life that God is specifically said not to do? Are there some things that God has told you to do that you’re not doing? Take the next five minutes and just talk to him. Let the Holy Spirit show you where you are at in your following God’s will.
